Live Your Melody
“If I were not a physicist, I would probably be a musician. I often think in music. I live my daydreams in music. I see my life in terms of music.”
~ Albert Einstein
Such beautiful words. “I see my life in terms of music.” So, let me ask you this: do you?
Music feeds the body and soul. It carries us to faraway lands; lets us relive beautiful moments; and inspires us.
Many people experience a rise in serotonin after listening to music. Serotonin lifts moods, contributes to a healthy sleep cycle (Not sleeping well? Listen to some soothing music before bed!), and helps with pain perception. Music often feeds our creativity, allowing us to celebrate our best selves.
It’s ______ o’clock. Have you filled your space with music today?
Yes, life is busy, but you can fill each day with music.
1. Enhance your routine with music. Include music with your workout (yes!), car ride, or quiet time before bed… don’t miss a day.
2. Consider soothing music with your meals. Years ago, Maria Simonson, director of the Health, Weight and Stress Clinic at the Johns Hopkins Hospital, conducted research on how music affects eating. She concluded that “without music, you'll eat more, do it quickly and ask for more food. With fast music, you'll eat more, do it quickly, not chew as well, pay less attention to it, talk more and digest poorly. But with soft, soothing music, you're more relaxed. You chew, savor and taste the food, linger over it, eat less and have less digestive problems.” (chicagotribune.com)
3. Sing. Join a chorus; belt it out with your favorite soundtrack; give a concert from the driver’s seat. Just let your voice out. It’s joyful.
4. Play an instrument. Still have that old flute in the closet? Dusty keyboard? You may be surprised how much muscle memory remains. Or learn a new instrument. It’s never too late to embrace the arts.
5. Go to a concert. Whether you’re a rocker or a lover of classical tones – treat yourself to an uninterrupted, musical tribute.
Literature abounds when it comes to “singing” the praises of music for our minds and bodies. But you know that surge you feel when music really touches you? That right there is your proof. Live your melody
