Slumber in Style: Embracing the Magic of Beauty Sleep*
Beauty Sleep (because there’s nothing pretty about sleep deprivation)
We all know sleep is mandatory. Yet, we believe that what needs to get done in our waking hours trumps our need for a good night’s sleep. Ridiculous. Ladies, it’s not called beauty sleep for nothing…
If one were to focus on rejuvenation (and what a coincidence, we are!), a healthy sleep routine would top the list. Just because you’re snoring away, doesn’t mean your body isn’t accomplishing major stuff. Yes, everyone (!) looks better after a good night’s sleep, but it’s important to understand that the brain does not shut down during sleep. It achieves a deeper level of consciousness (the REM dream state). If your REM sleep is disrupted for even one night, your body won’t follow its normal circadian sleep cycle (inner clock) progression. Poor sleep cycles can lead to grogginess, lack of concentration, excess hunger, weakened immune system, crankiness… oh the list goes on. And as I mentioned, it isn’t pretty.
And when it comes to problem solving, sleep may be the secret to success. Artists have long established a connection between creativity and sleep. There's scientific evidence that sleep helps organize and link the facts we know and the things we experience so that we are better able to problem solve upon awakening. While you sleep, your brain thinks outside the box.
According to the article "Memory Process And The Function Of Sleep," (Journal of Theoretics 2007), thoughts are held in your temporary memory until you sleep. Valuable new information and skills are added to your long-term memory when you sleep.
And then there’s the fact that growth hormone is released from the pituitary gland only during sleep. It strengthens bones, creates new muscle cells, helps us lose body fat, increases protein synthesis, stimulates maintenance of internal organs, supports pancreas and insulin production, and stimulates the immune system.
Solid, healthy sleep = all kinds of rejuvenation!
So, what can you do to ensure a good night’s sleep? Well…
1. Relax with soothing music before bedtime. Listening to music can help us fall asleep faster, awaken less frequently during the night, and feel more rested.
2. Go to bed at (about) the same time every night. 10:00 pm is ideal!
3. Create a pre-sleep ritual. We all brush our teeth (hopefully), but make this something more. Read inspirational literature, consider gratitude, enjoy soothing aromatherapy.
4. Let your waking hours include healthy movement. Lack of exercise can lead to restlessness.
5. Avoid snacks, caffeine, and alcohol before bedtime. They can inhibit healthy sleep.
Repeat after me: Sleep is good. Sleep is good. Sleep is good. Are we all clear? ;) You might want to start fluffing your pillow now.
