What I've Changed My Mind About
Eat Clean, Live Free came out in 2016. I still believe most of it. But another decade of coaching women — and living it myself — has changed my mind about a few things. Here's where I've grown.
Protein matters more than I believed
I used to think of protein as one part of a balanced plate. Now I think it's the part most women get the least of, and the one that changes the most — energy, strength, staying full, holding onto muscle. I count on it now in a way I didn't then.
Muscle is essential after forty
I always loved movement. But I underestimated muscle itself — not for how it looks, for how you live. After forty it's what keeps you strong, upright, and independent. It's the closest thing we have to insurance for the decades ahead.
Hormones deserve more conversation
For too long, women were left to white-knuckle through menopause in silence. I've watched hormones change lives, and I talk about them openly now — honestly, without fear, and always with a good doctor in the room.
Perfection isn't the goal
I think I once made clean eating sound like a standard to meet. It isn't. The goal was never a perfect plate — it's a life that feels good, most of the time. Take what serves you, and leave the rest.
Detoxes are tools, not lifestyles
A few clean days can be a lovely reset. But I no longer see ‘detox’ as a way to live — your body detoxes itself every day. The real work is what you do the other fifty weeks of the year.
Nervous system regulation matters as much as nutrition
This is the biggest one. I used to focus almost entirely on what you eat and how you move. Now I know that how safe and settled your nervous system feels shapes everything else — your cravings, your sleep, your hormones, your healing. It's why I built SOVA.
And so…
None of this makes the book wrong. It makes it a beginning. The Way is where it kept growing — and where it still does.
If you take one thing from this whole library, let it be this: you are allowed to change your mind as you learn. I have. That's not inconsistency — it's being alive to the work.
When the mind needs somewhere to land
Everything in this wing points, in the end, to the same place — the breath, and the nervous system beneath it. It is why I built SOVA: a quiet companion for the moments in between.
- Today — a daily practice that aligns you before the day pulls you a dozen directions.
- Companion — a place to process any feeling, even the happy ones.
- Pages — a soft place to set your thoughts down and out of your head.
- The House — rooms of calm to step into, whenever you need one.
