Pilates 101

Pilates 101
The short answer

Pilates is not about grinding, pushing, or competing. It is mindful movement — easing into what your body actually needs to move with control and ease. After thirty years of teaching, my one non-negotiable is form: the right movement, done well, for your body. Here is where to begin.

What Pilates actually is

At its heart, Pilates is control — strength, flexibility and alignment built through precise, mindful movement. Joseph Pilates said it plainly: ‘The mind, when housed within a healthful body, possesses a glorious sense of power.’ You work both sides of the body, and both sides of the brain; you build strength without strain; and you leave a session steadier than you arrived. It is exercise as a return to yourself, not a punishment.

Not every exercise is meant for every woman

This is the truth most of fitness forgets. I have watched women fold themselves into one-size-fits-all programs and end up with aches, injuries, and posture locked into all the wrong places. Bodies are unique — by age, by history, by the season of life. The right program meets your body where it is; the wrong one causes inflammation, strain, and sometimes lasting harm.

Form before everything

I am, admittedly, a stickler for form — I would rather not teach a movement at all than teach it before the body is ready. Good alignment comes first; strength and stability are built on top of it. This is especially true for the pelvic floor: a program that over-tightens around the pelvis can leave it tight and weak rather than strong.

Ease in

Most women need to ease into movement before turning it up. That is not a lack of ambition; it is wisdom. Start gentle, listen to your body, learn when you have had enough, and let the change come. Following through is its own reward — and the body you build slowly is the one that lasts.

Gina's tip

In your first weeks, the goal isn't to do more — it's to feel where the movement comes from. Master that, and everything else builds on it. Then see what to expect at your first session.

When the mind needs somewhere to land

Everything in this wing points, in the end, to the same place — the breath, and the nervous system beneath it. It is why I built SOVA: a quiet companion for the moments in between.
